Almadraba
Nueva
Umbría´s almadraba was built in 1929. These old facilities belong
to the village where crews and staff involved in it, were living for
at least six month (March to September). Almadraba is a fishing
skill, with great dimension and complex, for tuna fishing during
their migrations. Most were accompanied by their families, so the
population could be around 800 people, that´s, a small town where
there was no lack of services such as a commissary, school, bar,
hairdresser, craft shop, etc.
Almadraba´s fishing practice in the area dates probaly from the XV century. This almadraba was very active in the first-half XX century, as demonstrated the boats constructions around 1950, reaching annual catches around 32,000 tunas. From this time, the number of catches began to decrease sharply, until fishers decided, in 1963, to leave the fishing and its facilities, because of loss of profitability. In the early 80´s, there was another attempt to retrieve this kind of catch but it didn´t work.
