Historical Review

Although there are archaeological remains prior to the Roman period, it won´t be until this period when setting key on settlement mode, having its origin, maybe, in this moments.

The current urban location of Lepe has its roots in the early Middle Age. Thus it confirm us the archaeological references we know today. Lithic settlements, prehistorical and roman are located on the bow coastal ranging from La Antilla to the confluence with Piedras river.

During the Arab rule, Lepe knew a great development, becoming the center of the coastal area where Guadiana River comes together with Piedras river. It depended administratively on Niebla´s “Taifa” but when Arabs were expelled, this territory will be to “Orden del Temple”, taking out the area occupation by local settlers. Dissolved the “Orden” about 1312, Lepe was bought together with Ayamonte by Mrs María Coronel, in Fernando´s V time, thus swelling the domains of Guzmanes house, Lords of Niebla, under whose jurisdiction it was until mid-XV century. After a long period of family disputes, Lepe was given together with Ayamonte and La Redondela from Mr. Juan Alonso de Guzmán, duke of Medina Sidonia, to his daughter Mrs Teresa de Guzmán as a dowry in her marriage with Mr Pedro de Zúñiga, conforming later the Marquis of Ayamonte. It will continue joined to its history until the beginning of the XIX century, when the jurisdictional lordships were abolished. Thereafter Lepe begin its progress lonely as a rural village, agrarian and marine, fully immersed in landowner system, prevailing in the restoration and deeply rooted in all Andalusia, to continue drowsy during the postwar period. In the early sixty of last century, with modern economic projects and picking up its old identity, it starts a new economic, tourist and business path, to become  a modern and privileged city, with an unparalleled natural place, a pioneer on agriculture production systems, crops and irrigation, a powerful building industry and a consolidated tourist sector.
